Does Mr Poynton/ Mr roy/ Mr Samuels operate from any other hospitals apart from Mater Private Dublin/ cork ?

Our consultants are affiliated to Mater Private Dublin and Cork only for surgeries.

Does the Poynton SpineCare Institute see patients under 18 years of age?

We cater for patients 16 years of age upwards. If you are between 16 and 18 a parent/guardian must accompany you to clinic visits.

If I have no insurance or no insurance cover in the Mater Private Dublin can I attend the Poynton SpineCare institute?

If you are referred for injections or surgery in the Mater Private Dublin/ Cork costs for any procedure will be provided upon request by the finance team in the Hospital. In most instances the Mater Private will provide a "Fixed Cost" package which includes all costs associated with the operation or procedure including anaesthetic. 

I want to change my appointment

Contact the main office on info@poyntonspinecare.ie or 01 8822637 and inform them of your need to change appointment. Your consultants schedule may be full and next the available appointment will be offered.  To change physiotherapy appointments again contact the main office and inform the team of your need to change appointment.

I want to cancel my appointment

Contact the main office on info@poyntonspinecare.ie or 01 8822637 and inform them of your need to cancel appointment. If you want to be offered an appointment in the future let us know. If you do not wish to proceed with an appointment we will return your referral to your referral source i.e. GP, Consultant or Physiotherapist.

 

Appointments

New Patient

How do I get an appointment at The Poynton SpineCare Institute?     

Your Consultant, GP or Physiotherapist can refer you to The Poynton SpineCare Institute. They can do this by post/fax or email. You will also need an MRI scan of the problem area of your spine. The scan must be within 9- 12 months of your referral. We have access to Affidea and Alliance Scans on line however if you have had scans in other private centres the MRI scans needs to be sent into the Institute on a CD prior to your appointment. Your GP can refer you for an MRI, alternatively contact The Poynton SpineCare Institute and we will organise a referral.

What happens when my referral is sent to The Poynton SpineCare Institute?

Your referral and MRI scan are reviewed and clinically triaged. You will then receive an appointment to attend for a consultation at a Poynton SpineCare Institute clinic.

How long do I have to wait to see a surgeon?

This depends on the urgency of your case which is determined by our spinal surgeons following review of your referral letter and scans.  The current wait times are as follows between 1 and 6 weeks depending on clinical triage. Urgent cases may be seen outside these time frames.

Do I need an MRI prior to appointment at the p9oynton spinecare insitute and if so how do I get one?

Yes. Your GP can refer you; however The Poynton SpineCare Institute can also arrange one.

I want an urgent appointment

Once we have you referral and MRI scan one of our spinal surgeons will review your case and determine how quickly you should be seen. Patients in severe pain and those with neurological problem and serious pathology on MRI scan are given priority.   Our team will do everything possible to fast track your appointment if you are in severe pain and your GP feels an urgent appointment is required.

I have pain and I am waiting for an appointment in The Poynton SpineCare Institute

Until you have been seen in the Institute we cannot issue pain medication and you should discuss this with your GP.

I want a medico legal appointment – how do I get it?

If you are a patient of The Poynton SpineCare Institute and require Medico Legal review your solicitor can contact the office to go through the process with our administration team

What should I expect on my first consultation?

On your first consultation you will be asked by one of our administration team to fill out some demographic details to insure we have the most current contact details available for you and your GP/ Physiotherapist/ Consultant. This will allow us to update them on your progress – this is done with the patients’ prior permission. You may be also asked to fill out some assessment forms to assist in your treatment plans. 

You will be then be reviewed by either one of our Spinal Surgeons and/or Spine Specialist Physiotherapists / Nurses depending on your appointment type.

Return Patients

I was previously a patient ofthe poynton spinecare institute, how do I get a return appointment?

If it has been more than 2 years since your last appointment you will need a referral from your GP, Consultant or Physiotherapist. If less than 2 years contact The Poynton SpineCare Institute and we will discuss options with you.

I have had surgery a few years ago under the care of surgeons in the institute and now I am in pain and want to be seen in The Poynton SpineCare Institute?

If the pain is in the same area of the spine as the surgery was performed you will need further investigations including an MRI scan and possibly x-rays. The Team at The Poynton SpineCare Institute can arrange this for you and once one of our spinal surgeons has reviewed the scans a return appointment will be arranged. If your pain is coming from a different area we will need a referral from a GP, Consultant or Physiotherapist.

 

Injections

I have been referred by the Poynton SpineCare Institute for an injection – when will this take place?

Your referral will be sent to the Radiology Department in the Mater Private where they will then contact you directly to schedule your injection.  The Poynton SpineCare Institute team does not directly schedule the appointment. The contact details for the Radiology Department in the Mater Private is 01 8858171.

My injection hasn’t worked what do I do now?

You should come in for a spinal physiotherapy assessment to determine the best way forward.  All physiotherapists in The Poynton SpineCare Institute liaise directly with our spinal sugeons to formulate the best rehabilitation plan for you.


Physiotherapy

I have had physio in The Poynton SpineCare Institute and want to talk to a physio about my exercises how do I do this?

Contact the main office and give the name of your physio and a brief explanation to the administration team and they will pass this to your physiotherapist. The Physiotherapy team members are booked with clinical appointments all day so call backs may be 48 - 72 hours post request.  If your issues are regarding your current symptoms you may be advised to book for consultation.

I want to attend Institute for physio But have never attended previously – how do I arrange same?

The Poynton SpineCare Institute is a specialist spinal clinic, if you have a spinal complaint you will need a full evaluation including MRI scanning through our spinal assessment service. We will then be in a position to devise the best treatment plan for you. We will require a referral from your GP, Consultant or Physiotherapist.

 

Surgery

I am having an operation and I have some questions?

If following your consultations with one of our spinal surgeons you have further questions you can have a pre surgery consultation. You will have received an information pack and there is also information on the Patient Education Centre section of the website.

I have had an operation and cannot remember my post operative instructions?

If following your discharge from the Mater Private Hospital you have further questions you can contact the spine nurse specialist. You will have received their contact details.  You will have also received an information pack and there is also information on the Patient Education Centre section of the website.
